Arhaus and West Elm are two furniture retailers with different self-claimed benefits. Arhaus prides itself on handcrafted, artisan-made, assembled in the USA, reclaimed, recycled, salvaged wood and responsibly sourced materials. On the other hand, West Elm offers handcrafted, local products that are contract grade and assembled in the USA. They also claim to use low-VOC and nontoxic materials with water-based finishes for water efficiency. While both retailers offer some certified products, Arhaus has Sustainable Forestry Initiative certification while West Elm offers GOTS Certified, FSC Certified, OCS Certified, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Global Recycled Standard, Recycled Claims Standard and Greenguard Gold Certified products. However, neither retailer is certified themselves. In terms of their commitment to sustainability and ethical labor practices: Arhaus participates in the California Transparency in Supply Chain Act while West Elm is involved in several equitable labor programs such as Fair Trade USA Certified and Better Cotton Initiative. West Elm also has a Green Initiative where they partner with artisans around the world who use sustainably sourced materials as much as possible. They collaborate with artisan collectives around the world to help preserve their handcraft traditions and create opportunities for sustainable employment. Overall both retailers have unique offerings but if certifications are important to you as a consumer it is recommended to check product specifications before purchasing from either retailer.
